NCG Review – Sakuna: of rice and ruin (Switch, PS4, PC)

I won’t lie to everyone, but Animal Crossing: New Horizon has basically gotten me through the entire COVID-19 pandemic. After many months of playing, I eventually needed to break away. I needed a new adventure and just a little more action, and yet, I wasn’t able to easily break away. That is, until Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin. Developed by Edelwise and published by XSEED, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is a farming simulator/side-scrolling action game. Combined with a new take on Japanese lore, this title is a fantastic combination of story-telling and gameplay.

Story

The story starts with a small group of humans who have had a tough lot in life. Somehow, they make it to the Lofty Realm; the land of the gods. Meanwhile, the goddess, Princess Sakuna, is living her best life celebrating , eating tons of food, and drinking lots of sake. Upon discovering that humans have made it to the Lofty Realm, Sakuna goes to send them back to the human realm lest their appearance cause an uproar amongst the other gods. The humans are just a little bit too clever and end of up getting the best of Sakuna, so much so, that Sakuna ends up blowing up Lady Kamuhitsuki’s store of rice!

Upset to have lost her rice offerings, head goddess Lady Kamuhitsuki bans Sakuna from the lofty realm to the Isle of Demons, where Sakuna must clear the island of all demons before sending the group of humans back to the human realm.

From there, the game progresses. Through the story, we learn about Sakuna’s hertiage, the cause of the demons on the island, the past of the humans, and, of course, about growing rice! The story has a wonderful touch of Japanese mythology and really brings perspective to the rice cultivating culture – it’s a lot of work!

Gameplay

There are two methods of game play: farming and side-scrolling action.

For farming, you need to pay attention to the seasons. Depending on what time of the year it is, you will need to know how to maintain your rice. In the spring time, you need to plant the rice; in the summer time you need to maintain it; by autumn you need to have harvested all of the rice; and by winter you will need to hull the rice, sift out the good seeds, and till the land. Meanwhile, you will need to keep the field weed-free, fertilized, and properly watered! Whew, that’s a lot, isn’t it? You can pass the tasks off to the other characters in the game, however, the quality of the rice is diminished and you won’t have the best results.

The farming, being one of the key parts of the game, feels somewhat clunky to me. I love growing my own rice, but I hate doing the physical actions involved in it. This is mostly because of the controls. The way Sakuna moves in the field, overall, feels very awkward to me and it’s hard to grasp her body position with how I want to use my controller. If I move forward, I want Sakuna to move forward, but instead her body position flips and the task I was trying to do messes up. It takes a lot of getting used to. I’m not sure if this is to emphasize just how difficult growing rice can be, but it definitely made this part of the game hard to get through.

The side-scrolling action part is just that, side-scrolling action. On the Isle of Demons, Sakuna needs to clear each area and learn more about the demons. Sakuna wields two weapons, uses normal attacks, uses heavy attacks, and uses skill attacks. Sakuna also has the divine raiment, a magical sash that assists attacks and helps traverse through the different terrains.

The game play is easy, and I like how I can mix up my buttons to unleash different attacks. Attacks can also be customized so you can put them in for whichever input is most comfortable for you. My least favorite part of the gameplay is the divine raiment. The divine raiment is great for battle to block, counter, and move around the screen to better position Sakuna, but I hate using it to traverse the terrain. This might be personal, but I hate having to jump around in stages! Although, I really like how they created this aspect of Sakuna, since the divine raiment has meaning within the story.

Through growing the rice and fighting demons, Sakuna collects food and supplies that help sustain life on the island.

Another important aspect of the game is food. Sakuna needs to eat. When she is hungry, her health won’t recover. Food also provides extra skills to Sakuna, giving her buffs and extra health. These are especially important when certain stages have challenges such as poison or lava.

This game has a lot of balance. You can’t just focus on farming or grind all the areas. Night will bring stronger demons, Sakuna will get hungry and her health will not recover, and, if you’re up too late you end up being too exhausted to explore new areas the next day. Luckily, there is no shortage of things to keep Sakuna busy. While playing you really have to balance farming and exploring. I think this balance helps pace the game and story.

Graphics/Music

The graphics on this game has a waterpaint cell shaded look. The characters are beautiful and the game runs incredibly smooth. I popped it on the PS5 and was awed by just how amazing the game looked. You get the same effect on a PS4 Pro. The overall look of the game is stunning!

The sound track mixes well with the overall style of the game. It has a traditional sound that places you right on the Isle of Demons.

Verdict

Pros: This game is beautiful! The story is it’s own blend of Japanese mythology with it’s own original story added into it. It also makes something that might not be that interesting (rice harvesting), into a rich storyscape. The characters are all memorable with their own quirks. The game play is fun and balanced so you can’t easily grind through the whole game. You really do need to take your time and cultivate your own land.

Cons: The farming can be clunky, and tedious. It sucks when you’re on a roll exploring a new area and then suddenly you have to go harvest your rice and get it hulled and ready before the spring time. On top of that, Sakuna is difficult to control during these farming actions.

Overall, I would give this game an 8 out of 10. I love the story, characters, gameplay, and overall look and feel of the game. I also love how it makes growing rice a unique experience. If I felt tired by having to farm in the game, can I even begin to imagine what it would be like to grow rice just to live?

Have you had a chance to pick up this title? If so, what do you think? Are there any games you have played that have made something you didn’t even think could be interesting, interesting? Let us know in the comments!

NCG – Review – Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] (PS4, PSVita, Steam)

Under_Night_3

Story

Being an updated version, the game introduces 4 new characters as well as a new story mode in which players can unfold the story of the world in a Visual Novel gameplay style. When I say Visual Novel, I mean Visual Novel! There is no gameplay in this mode, but that does not mean the story is horrible. Players of the anime community will really enjoy the twists and turns in the story.Under_Night_6

Visuals

The visuals are somewhat the same from the original, and that is not a problem at all of because the game has its own distinct look and manages to keep everything pretty simple. With a 2D drawn art style that still draws me in when turning this title on, I can say a lot of gamers will like how it looks. It reminds me of Anime mixed with a dark theme such as Darkstalkers.UNIST_25

During fights the visuals of each special attack work well and look great. The menu has more of an arcade look and is simple enough where new players can navigate with ease. Even the story mode looks awesome with the visual novel art style.

Audio

The soundtrack to UNIST brings back some of the previous titles tracks as well as a few new tracks, and the new tracks still holds up to the magnificent scores for combat and story telling.UNIST_EU_Announcement_2

Gameplay

I always felt Under Night never had any spotlight in North America, and is very under rated, but with the new update I hope that changes as this title is a must have for fighting game enthusiast. The core gameplay is the same as most anime fighters, without the air dash. So, it’s sort of like The King of Fighters meets Anime! Combos are limited to one button press for standing and crouching per button, and in the air so players need to strategize what they will do in each combo. It also has an  auto combo for players that bash buttons, but this limits button mashing to execute really short combos the game wants you to learn passing and how to get in without button mashing, and this is perfect for new players wanting to join the fighting game community.UNIST_EU_Announcement_5

As I mentioned, this is a great game for new players because there is a new tutorial mode where everything is explained for fighting games in general. From executing and getting in, to how to finish combos and set up for another; this is a way to learn UNIST as wells as any other fighting essentials.UNIST_EU_Announcement_6

Of course, there is also online Ranked and Unranked play, which hold itself together pretty well but not to a perfect degree. The netcode isn’t perfect, as some matches lag even with two solid connections, but for the most part it is playable more than half of the time. And as for Ranked matches, the lobby’s will be full of veterans of the title, so I would recommend new players to not approach Ranked until you are ready to take on the best.

As mentioned, UNIST has 4 new cast members, Phonon with her whip, Mika a child with gigantic robotic hands, Wagner holding her sword and shield, and Enkidu who is pure martial arts. None of these characters feel like a rehash of previous characters or each other, and new players will be happy to see each have a different play style.

Verdict

With Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] coming out after one of the biggest fighting games this year a lot of players might miss this title. With an awesome Story mode for single player, fantastic visuals, and many more new additions, Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] is a must have in my opinion. Although it lacks in online play at the moment, this is a great title for any one who is a fighting game fan our even a competitive fighting game player. I rate Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] an 8 out of 10.Score

NCG Review – Mercenary Kings Reloaded Edition (PS4, PSVita, Switch, PC, Xbox One)

Title: Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition
Platform: PS4, PSVita, Switch, PC, Xbox One

Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition is an enhanced port of its original title Mercenary Kings, which was release back in 2014. This enhanced port is available free to anyone who has purchased the original title, and is also available for purchase for Switch owners and newcomers. This time around the Reloaded Edition comes with some new content such as new balances, weapons and characters. Is it worth a revisit, or does it lack in bringing players back to the mayhem?

Visuals

Mercenary Kings Reloaded Edition gameplay visuals take inspiration from classic titles such as the Metal Slug series. With the gorgeous and smooth animated retro style character sprites and the 16-bit backgrounds, Mercenary Kings Reloaded Edition fits perfect on one of its new home, the Nintendo Switch, along with the platforms it has made a return to. It never got old seeing the different variations of enemies and bosses even after the 4 years that have passed by since the first title.MercenaryKings_Screenshot_01MercenaryKings_Screenshot_03

Audio

The soundtrack of Mercenary Kings Reloaded Edition is still the same tracks from the original, and is still engaging as ever bring back that old school shooter genre attitude and feel. The tracks never felt like they were too repetitive and used too much throughout the game and the sound FX is what to expect as wellMercenaryKings_Screenshot_06

Gameplay

The core gameplay is back, as players will take on many missions such as rescue, item collecting, eliminate and many more different style missions. Co-op is back as well, with four player split screen and online play, so players can take on the missions with some friends at anytime.

When entering a missions players will be thrown into one of many maps to take on their, loaded with re-spawning enemies and items to find, but this isn’t your typical side-scrolling shooter. Players will be placed at a random point on the stage, and be able to freely explore the map. This is what keeps the game feeling fresh, as players will never feel like one map is ever the same.FriggCombatShort.gif

Like I mentioned, enemies will be everywhere, and if you backtrack to an area, the enemies will have re-spawned. This helps the game feel like maps are not so empty, and is very satisfying and frustrating at the same time. The frustrating part is that sometimes during collecting missions some big enemies feel like they just get in the way and shouldn’t have the abilities to re-spawn, as they take some time to defeat. Other than that, the core gameplay is addicting.

Weapon crafting is back and with some new knives and gun parts to discover. If you are a player that likes to collect items and craft items, Mercenary Kings Reloaded Edition has a lot of crafting options for you. Players will collect items and craft new weapons and parts which will change how you gun works, or how far your knife will reach. This mechanic gave the game a huge amount of replay value.

Verdict

Mercenary Kings Reloaded Edition is a perfect revisit to the title, and holds its guns up high. The title is also a perfect fit for its first appearance on the Nintendo Switch. I really recommend players who haven’t played the previous title to give Mercenary Kings Reloaded Edition a try, and veterans to revisit the title. This title is certainly a game to check out, and I give Mercenary Kings Reloaded Edition a 7/10.Score

NCG Review – Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle (PS4, Switch)

As Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle V was first announced, I was really excited for the 3rd person arena fighter/shooter. Especially since Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet was a really fun in-depth title. When I jumped into Burst Battle on for the first time, I found out I was getting into something from a different nature.kobuto_jp_ss6.png

Audio

Like any Touhou titles, the music is terrific! Compiled of remixes of character theme songs, the music is something that all players can enjoy in this title. The sound effects sort of work, but can get repetitive, and other than that, there is nothing more, or new. A lot of the sound effects were just reused sounds from Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet.kobuto_jp_ss5.png

Gameplay

This is usually where Touhou titles really shine, but in Burst Battle, the development just wasn’t executed right. First off, there is no video or game play tutorial, which this title really needs to have in order for players to understand what they are doing. There is only a manual that is on the main menu, which many players will probably miss since it’s in such a weird spot.kobuto_jp_ss2.png

Once players finally start to figure out the game, they will notice it has the core mechanics of an arena battle game. The down side is that it is slow, clunky and there is no character balance. Players will spend most of their time waiting on each stamina meter to refill to try to use the most powerful attack through a match. As for game modes, players will have a choice of the single player story mode, arcade mode, score attack, VS, and online. touhou-kobuto-v-burst-battle-3

When jumping into the single player story mode, one of the first and upsetting part was that I didn’t get to pick a character. Automatically, I was thrown into the story of Reimu Hakurei. After completing her story, you are forced to do the next character story and so on. Wasn’t too big of a deal, but I would have liked to choose which character to play. As for the other modes, it’s just the story mode without the story.2

Verdict

It really disappointed me as a fan of arena battle style titles that Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle missed out on being a great title. It has the mechanics, the music… the pointless story, but I felt like it had no signs of a fast pace, bullet hell, Touhou feel that the other titles have. This is not a game to pick up for the price, but rather a borrow from a friend that is a hardcore Touhou fan. It sucks to say but I have to give this title a 1 out of 10.
