Monsters & Monocles Review

Retro Dreamer released Monsters & Monocles last week as an early access game on Steam for $14.99

Since this is an early access game, let me give you some early news on it.

If the developers name didn’t give it away, M&M (not the candy or the rapper, cause that’s spelled different) is a retro styled game somewhat like a Contra, top-down style, but not as ugly and much more fun. You can play as 1 of 4 stylish Victorian Era dressed characters; Rupert Killingsworth, Lady Cannonhail, Baron Von Dogface and Nanobot (who isn’t a nanobot) They are a group of Paranormal Investigators out to find out what happened to an occult item collector.

Control wise, you can use the mouse and keyboard or a game pad. I think the game pad is much easier to use since the game tells you the controls for it. As you progress through the game, you can find different guns and can carry two at a time. These include, but are not limited to, hand cannon, spread shot, and grenade launchers. My favorite, so far, is the spread shot because it covers more area. One thing I didn’t like was that guns can overheat; its a retro style game and should have no such thing!

So far, I’m enjoying killing supernatural beings as a dog in a smoking coat. The fact that I can play this game with people around the world is even better, but in the end nothing beats playing in the same room with your pals like in the old days.

Finally, I would say give it a try. It might be a little too early since the game will still have updates, but it is already pretty fun with friends.  Check out this trailer if you are still not convinced!
