Team NCG’s Games of the Year 2016

2016 was yet another great year for games and we’ve played all we could get our hands on. Out of all the game releases, we all sat down and picked out our favorites.  Here are our top picks for 2016:

Frost – Pokemon Sun and Moon
Pokemon Moon brought back the nostalgia of old Pokemon games but still managed to add elements to the game to make it feel new.  It was like an RPG, but with Pokemon.

Dark_Laharl – The Division
“When The Division first came out I just had to buy it, I was able to play in the beta and liked that I saw. Once I had the full game I spent hours playing and had lots of fun as I leveled up and found new equipment. I played a lot of it with a co-worker and despite having a hard time dropping legendary loot it was fun while we completed the story, this alone made it the game of the year. Never mind that it sucked a lot after the story was over, meaning the end game was trash.”

“When deciding what to pick for my favorite game of 2016 I wanted to put a little more though into what it was that made it so I enjoyed playing a particular game. And it became clear that quality the game play was determined by the time I spent playing it and perceived enjoyment I got after playing the game.

My game of the year is Overwatch; this is the same game I had originally perceived as a Generic shooter and a Team Fortress 2 clone. The game uses simple mechanics that almost felt ripped from different shooters. It has Characters that felt too familiar as I could swear I had just played them in different games while the maps or arenas felt small and clustered.

Nonetheless it was actually all these things brought together that made the game so enjoyable. The simplicity of the game in a highly competitive format made it so that even the most inexperienced player could pick it up and actually contribute. From the start every characters mechanics are clear, characters are balanced to be able to counter each other, there is the never the worry of having someone pick that one toon who developers can’t get right because of their strengths. You no longer are playing a game where you pick the strongest character, but rather picking the best character for whatever scenario your team needs to overcome.

As skill in the game is gained, it becomes apparent that it’s not your ability to go off and kill the enemy that sets you apart, but how you contribute, communicate and execute as a team. And this is truly what you want in any game that consists of group gameplay. After a match despite win or lose your contributions are clearly presented. Matches don’t end leaving you empty handed, like if the last half hour was wasted thanks to a special fairy who could not grasp the game. Queue time, load time and replay time is low, allowing you to enjoy more of that sweet gameplay you came for.

Those are my reason for making this my game of the year for 2016. When things are said and done every match felt rewarding and queuing up for another round was always an experience I welcomed. I believe it simplicity that makes this game so special and look forward to seeing how the game evolves thanks to numerous new characters and maps being released for the 2017 seasons.”

Stellar.ice – Overcooked
Overcooked is one of those games where you grab a couple of drinks, get your friends together, and let the chaos unfold.  You’ll spend most of the night shouting directions at one another, catching the kitchen on fire, and somehow manage to pull off the perfect service. I think it’s one of the best social games I’ve played because it forces you to work as a team rather than against each other.  The game is challenging enough to make you replay some levels, and you’re always willing to start from the beginning to bring new people into the kitchen.

UndED – Forza Horizon 3
Forza Horizon 3 was a breath of fresh air for me.  While many of my other games lost their sheen after mere days of playing, Forza Horizon 3 kept me coming back to it for months.  Variety is the name of the game here, with several choices of cars, events, and locations to make sure you don’t get bored. FH3 is easily the funnest and most rewarding game I’ve played in recent memory, and the inclusion of the Blizzard Mountain DLC had me back at the wheel, drifting through icy turns with a passion.”

Mass Effect: Andromeda Release Date Announced!!!!

Yes you heard it here, its been announced!

Electronic Arts and BioWare has announced the release date for Mass Effect Andromeda. The game will release March 21st in the US and March 23rd in Europe for some reason.

On behalf of our teams across Montreal, Edmonton and Austin, I’m excited to announce that Mass Effect: Andromeda will be launching in North America on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 and beginning Thursday, March 23, 2017 in Europe. We appreciate your patience (and in fact, even your lack of patience in some instances) as we’ve been focused on completing the game. Here’s a little bit of context into how we’ve gotten here.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is our most ambitious Mass Effect game to date. We’re telling completely new stories, creating new characters, new planets, new species, and introducing new gameplay systems. And for the first time, we’re bringing Mass Effect to the Frostbite game engine, an incredible engine that’s delivering a tremendous graphical jump from the trilogy to Mass Effect: Andromeda. To deliver on this, we’re taking all the time we can to make sure you’re getting the best possible experience.

Over this holiday break, developers at BioWare took home a version of the game in what we call the “holiday build”. This is a longstanding studio tradition that goes back to the early days of the original Mass Effect. Many load up a PC or console and go home to play as much as possible at their leisure. Coming back from holiday, the feedback has been great. Getting the endorsement from members of our studio, many of whom played key roles on the original trilogy, was definitely a key factor in helping us lock in on the date.

Even more exciting for us over the last couple of months has been seeing the excitement build in the community as we’ve started to share more about the game. The passion you have for the franchise continues to drive us. And now, we’re just a couple of months away from delivering a brand new Mass Effect experience to you for the first time in five years – richer, deeper and ready for exploration. We’re excited about how far we are going with the franchise, and we hope you find it’s been worth the wait.

Final Fantasy XIV’s new expansion Stormblood Details, and Release Date

During the Final Fantasy Fan Festival 2016 in Tokyo, Square Enix announced the release date for Final Fantasy XIV‘s new expansion, Stormblood along with more depth details of what to expect. Stormblood is set to release on June 20 2017 in North America and Europe, and players will be able to pre-order the highly-anticipated follow-up to Heavensward starting January 24 to receive exclusive bonuses.

You can read the keynote that producer/director Naoki Yoshida announced  for Stormblood, below:


 

  • New Job – Red Mage (DPS Role): The highly anticipated red mage job will make its debut in Stormblood as a ranged magic DPS, wielding a rapier and magicked crystal medium. A very mobile attacker, the red mage dives in and out of melee combat, assaulting enemies with red magic and short-ranged attacks. The red mage also has the ability to link multiple spells with chainspell, dealing massive damage and following them up with melee attacks.
  • Swimming and Diving: This new gameplay mechanic will allow players to seamlessly enter and traverse specific rivers, lakes, and seas in both new and existing areas throughout Eorzea®. Players will also be able to dive underwater in select locations, even while riding flying mounts. Underwater areas will not only include new gathering locations, but also will provide an opportunity for NPC interaction.

 

  • New Beast Tribe and Primal: The Ananta, an all-female beast tribe, is the newest of the beast tribes to be introduced to the world of FFXIV. This ancient tribe resides in the mountains near Ala Mhigo and worships the primal Lakshmi. Known for their skill in spell and gemcraft, the Lamia will play a very important role in the Stormblood main scenario as their persecution by the Garlean Empire is revealed.

 

  • New High-Level Raid: The Bend of Time – Omega was announced as the high-level raid series for Stormblood. Omega has surfaced within the main scenario in the past, but this menace will soon appear in full force. The mystery behind the appearance of Omega and the significance of “The Bend of Time” will be unveiled through the story surrounding this raid.

 

  • New Alliance Raid: Two special guest creators were invited to assist with the design of the newly-announced alliance raid “Return to Ivalice”: Yasumi Matsuno (FINAL FANTASY XII / FINAL FANTASY TACTICS) will write the scenario surrounding the raid, while Keita Amemiya (Onimusha 2 / Shin Megami Tensei IV) will spearhead monster and boss design.
  • Stormblood Theme Song: Legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu will return to create the main theme song for Stormblood.

Rounding out the announcements, SQUARE ENIX revealed information on the Stormblood collector’s edition. This version features a special box with art decoration by Yoshitaka Amano, as well as:

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 Road To Boruto DLC Trailer

Bandai Namco has released a new trailer for their upcoming NARUTO SHIPPUDEN™: Ultimate Ninja® STORM 4 DLC expansion, Road to Boruto, available for the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, and Steam.

The new trailer focuses on five new playable characters including Boruto Uzumaki, Sarada Uchiha, Mitsuki, Naruto Uzumaki (Road to Boruto version), and Sasuke Uchiha (Road to Boruto version). Each character comes with a new moveset for players to learn and master in Free Battle mode and the new story mode that follows the events of “BORUTO: NARUTO THE MOVIE”.


Players who already own NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 4 can download the Road to Boruto DLC for $19.99 on the PlayStation 4 system, Xbox One, and Steam. A physical version of NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 4 with the Road to Boruto expansion can be purchased for $49.99.
