Orange – Anime Series

I’ll start off by saying I am a big sucker for Shoujo series.  Something about love triangles, high school drama, and first loves has become a guilty pleasure.  Summer 2016 has a few Shoujo anime series to check out, but my favorite, by far, is definitely Orange.

An adaptation of the manga series by Ichigo Tanako, Orange is a slice-of-life romance series that follows Naho Takamiya.  Naho is a kind girl who goes out of her way to make sure she doesn’t trouble others.  When she receives a letter from her future self she realizes that the way she is living will leave her will a lot of regrets in her future.  It is up to her present self to change so that she can have a future with no regrets.

I’ll start off by saying I like the art style and characters.  It’s strange to say, but anime characters having teeth makes the design stand out from other shoujo series.

The story line is your typical shoujo story. What I think separates it from other series is that even though Naho knows what the future will entail, she struggles to make the changes.  The decisions she makes and her struggles feel very real world and sometimes she fails to muster up the courage to make the change.  It fulfills the requirements for “slice-of-life”, which is another one of my guilty pleasures when it comes to any manga/anime series.

I really enjoy how the Time-Travel aspect isn’t completely lost in the series.  In fact, it’s plays an important role.  The expansion of time travel theory and how Naho contemplates it makes the letter from her future self more plausible.  It’s not just a gimmick to make her change. Even if it is, it’s some food for thought.  It inspires me to make decisions today so I don’t regret them later!

“Orange” is also a meaningful title.  Like time-travel, it’s relevant to the tone and characters of the story. Oranges aren’t always sweet; they can also be bitter.

For the Shoujo, slice-of-life manga/anime lovers, Orange is a series to check out this summer. You can find it Sundays on Crunchyroll.

Have you checked out the series? Have you read the manga? What’s your favorite Shoujo manga? Final thoughts? Let me know in the comments!

NCG Recommends: Ranma 1/2

Back in 1989, Japan saw the release of Ranma 1/2. The animation recieved poor reception and  only lasted 18 episodes before it was cancelled. A few months later, it was reworked and went on to produce 143 episodes! I am glad they reworked it because Ranma 1/2 is one of my all time favorite anime/manga; it was actually the first manga series I really got into.

The story follows Ranma as he tries to live a normal life while being cursed. His curse? He turns into a girl every time he is splashed with cold water and back into a boy when splashed with hot water. He tries to keep this a secret from his classmates at first, but as the series progresses many characters discover his secret. Reoccurring elements of the story are the girls chasing Ranma wanting to be his fiance, or his rivals wanting to beat him in martial arts. It is actually a very funny series because Ranma is not the only one who is cursed: his father turns into a Panda, one of the girls chasing him turns into a cat (and Ranma is super afraid of cats), his main rival turns into a pig who happens to be in love with one of his fiances, and more!

The cool thing about the series is that it doesn’t completely follow a set story. Most of the time you can grab any old volume and read without missing too much. Of course, you should read the first volume to get a good idea of the main characters. This series comes highly recommended, give it a watch/read!

Have you picked up this series yet? If so, what did you think? If not, do you plan on checking it out? Let us know in the comments!

Berserk (2016) Blood and Guts

maxresdefault16

3 years ago was the last time we saw an animated Berserk story, but now it’s back to continue where the story left off. Personally, I had never watched Berserk when it originally debuted. It wasn’t until two years ago that I sat down and watched the series in its entirety. Even though the style was a little dated I really enjoyed it, and of course the ending made me demand more!

Spoilers for older anime: In this continuation Guts, our Hero? is out for vengeance against the betrayal of his best friend Griffith. Alone after his comrades are killed and his lover raped and driven insane, Guts will stop at nothing to kill Griffith and the other demon apostles. The 2016 anime picks up where the manga begins.

If you’re a fan of the older Berserk, I definitely recommend the new 2016 series. The art style is definitely different than the previous incarnations, it has a little or a lot more CG style art, but I don’t think it’s much of a distraction ( it is actually kinda neat), especially after the older 1980’s-1990’s look, which sadly, I am not a huge fan of.

Are you a fan of Berserk? Are you watching? Let me know in the comments! I’m hoping to see the Berserk armor debut in this new series.

Danganronpa 3: Despair Arc Episode 3

Farewell to all Futures
(Yes, there are spoilers.)

For those who didn’t follow the game, Natsumi Kuzuryu is introduced.  She is Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu’s (the Ultimate Gangster) younger sister and is the self-proclaimed Ultimate Little Sister. Her part in the show was cut extremely short. I was hoping we’d get to see her for a couple more episodes but then again, this is a show about Despair. I am pretty stoked to see more of the events around Twilight Syndrome.

So, while I have your attention, does anyone have any thoughts regarding Natsumi’s murder? Do you think Sato is the murderer?

Here’s why I believe she isn’t:
-Mahiru and Sato refer to an incident that happened in their junior high school Photography Club.
-Mahiru and Natsumi got into an argument and Sato stepped in
-Sato has a scar on her arm, but does not say where the scar came from.  Instead, she says “Later that night…” with no further detail. She never explicitly states that it came from Natsumi.
-Sato and Mahiru both believe that “It must have been that person.”
-When Hajime asks Sato for the truth, she complies with the story that Natsumi was murdered by a suspicious intruder.  She then goes on to say, “Or it must have been a suicide.” To me, this suggests that she didn’t know the details of the murder.  If she had been the murderer she would have known that it wasn’t a suicide.
-Sato is murdered.

These fact can also work against me.  Sato is certain that Natsumi plans to harm Mahiru. Sato also becomes very distraught when she realizes that Hajime knew that Natsumi wouldn’t kill herself.  It could simply be Sato trying to reassure herself that she made the right choices. Or she’s trying to hold on to the idea that she deserved to die?

In addition, do you think the Kuzuryu’s murdered Sato or do you think it was “that person”? Please share your thoughts in the comments!

Episode 3 really highlights the tension between the reserve course and the main campus of Hope’s Peak Academy.  Reserve course students are viewed as “talentless” and there’s this stigma attached to them since they are  paying to attend such a prestigious school.

The relationships between the Ultimate’s and Reserve Course students is not portrayed as one of equality.  Mahiru (the Ultimate Photographer) and Sato (a reserve course student) have a great friendship, however, Sato is more obsessed with Mahiru’s talent rather than her person.  Sato says, “You are the photography clubs Hope”. The analogy is used twice, by Natsumi and Juzo, that reserve course students cling to the Ultimate students like crap on a goldfish.

This aspect of Danganronpa is pretty critical to the rest of the show.  This is a battle between Hope and Despair and the reserve course plays a major role in The Incident.  The envy for talent, the lust for talent, and the hopelessness of never being able to enter the main campus makes it that much easier to be manipulated by Despair.

Juzo also makes his appearance.  This time he is the Head of Security.  While he definitely comes off as an asshole, he has good intentions.  Hajime knows quite a bit about Natsumi’s death, but investigating it further could put him in harms way. While Juzo has somewhat decent intentions, I think he is what pushes Hajime to participate in the experiment.  Being told that he is a useless cog and brushing Natsumi’s death under the rug simply because she was a reserve course student is infuriating.  Hajime will have Artificial Talent and become an Artificial Hope.  But Hajime also mentions that he is “empty”.  This hollowness makes him susceptible to whoever is willing to influence him first.

I’m still curious to see who is behind what makes Hope’s Peak Academy rotten.  It couldn’t all be Junko, could it?

I really love the relationship between Hajime and Nanami.  I still think that Nanami is a real person, not an AI because I don’t think an AI could blush like that!

D.Gray-Man – Hallow

I’m back with another recommendation!

No doubt, some of you have already heard of D.Gray-man which originally began running in Manga form back in 2004 and then an Anime back in 2006. If you have heard of it, then you know it was going through some tough times; chapters stopped coming out at one point leaving us all on edge as to what was coming next.

Now, we can rejoice! D.Gray-man is back with D.Gray-man Hallow Anime and chapters being released monthly. I am a big fan of this series. The main protagonist, Allen Walker,  is 15 at the start of the show. He uses his left arm as a weapon to destroy the akuma. The basic jist of the series is that the Noah clan, lead by the Millennium Earl, are out to destroy all of humanity. The Black Order stands in their way with its members being people who can use the special weapons called “innocence” that destroy the akuma.

If you already know about the series, then you can continue watching the anime were it left off, with Allen’s group getting stronger and moving their base of operations to a new home. For everyone else who hasn’t watched, lucky you! You have 103 episodes to watch and catch up before watching D.Gray-Man Hallow. Go! watch! I think you will like it.
