NCG Recommends Joker Game

The Spring 2016 anime line-up had some great series this season, one of them being  Joker Game.  Joker Game is seinen series that takes place during World War II where information was of the highest value but also the most difficult to obtain.  Based on a novel series by Koji Yanagi, the series was adapted into a live-action film (which I have not watched) and an anime series.

Story
The story follows eight agents of the “D Agency”; young men who have undergone rigorous training meant to break their body and mind. Those who passed the exams are given a new identity and sent around the world to complete missions while becoming  as invisible as they possibly can.

What’s interesting about the series is that it is not one story arc, but rather episodic stories that span up to two episodes at the most.  Not all stories follow the main “spy”, but they link to a made-up historical event and the mission ranges from infiltrating terrorist groups, collecting information, exposing corruption, and even being exposed as a spy! The spy can either be the main character or a side character, but this doesn’t lessen the story in anyway.  In fact, not following a main character is what makes this show so intriguing.

The stories themselves are also very clever.  The first episode shows the mind games the spies are capable of, but as the series progresses their expert skill and prowess comes to light.  The spies are able to maintain their secret identities because of their vigorous training in even the most intense situation so you can’t help but wonder how the event will play out.

What I loved the most was how believable each story was.  None of the stories are based on any actual events, but they’re portrayed realistically (well, maybe except for the super spy aspect) that I’d believe certain events were absolutely plausible.

Art/Style
The art style is very close to seinen series, but not so rough.  It’s appealing, in my opinion, to all audiences.

I think the series also does a wonderful job capturing the historical aspect of the show down to fashion and locale.  I felt I had been removed from the 21st century and placed into the early 1900’s.   The underplayed colors set the tone for the World War II era.

Verdict
When I first started the series I was confused about the nature of the anime since I thought it would follow the main character of the first two episodes.  When he disappeared and never referred to again I was at a loss of what was going on. I think the short run time (only 12 episodes) and episodic story telling makes the series forgettable.

Despite that, I really loved the series. It was fun to jump into the world of spies with made up missions and tales of espionage.  Joker Game comes highly recommended for those who enjoy historical, seinen anime.  You can find all 12 episodes now on Crunchyroll now.

Orange – Anime Series

I’ll start off by saying I am a big sucker for Shoujo series.  Something about love triangles, high school drama, and first loves has become a guilty pleasure.  Summer 2016 has a few Shoujo anime series to check out, but my favorite, by far, is definitely Orange.

An adaptation of the manga series by Ichigo Tanako, Orange is a slice-of-life romance series that follows Naho Takamiya.  Naho is a kind girl who goes out of her way to make sure she doesn’t trouble others.  When she receives a letter from her future self she realizes that the way she is living will leave her will a lot of regrets in her future.  It is up to her present self to change so that she can have a future with no regrets.

I’ll start off by saying I like the art style and characters.  It’s strange to say, but anime characters having teeth makes the design stand out from other shoujo series.

The story line is your typical shoujo story. What I think separates it from other series is that even though Naho knows what the future will entail, she struggles to make the changes.  The decisions she makes and her struggles feel very real world and sometimes she fails to muster up the courage to make the change.  It fulfills the requirements for “slice-of-life”, which is another one of my guilty pleasures when it comes to any manga/anime series.

I really enjoy how the Time-Travel aspect isn’t completely lost in the series.  In fact, it’s plays an important role.  The expansion of time travel theory and how Naho contemplates it makes the letter from her future self more plausible.  It’s not just a gimmick to make her change. Even if it is, it’s some food for thought.  It inspires me to make decisions today so I don’t regret them later!

“Orange” is also a meaningful title.  Like time-travel, it’s relevant to the tone and characters of the story. Oranges aren’t always sweet; they can also be bitter.

For the Shoujo, slice-of-life manga/anime lovers, Orange is a series to check out this summer. You can find it Sundays on Crunchyroll.

Have you checked out the series? Have you read the manga? What’s your favorite Shoujo manga? Final thoughts? Let me know in the comments!

Berserk (2016) Blood and Guts

maxresdefault16

3 years ago was the last time we saw an animated Berserk story, but now it’s back to continue where the story left off. Personally, I had never watched Berserk when it originally debuted. It wasn’t until two years ago that I sat down and watched the series in its entirety. Even though the style was a little dated I really enjoyed it, and of course the ending made me demand more!

Spoilers for older anime: In this continuation Guts, our Hero? is out for vengeance against the betrayal of his best friend Griffith. Alone after his comrades are killed and his lover raped and driven insane, Guts will stop at nothing to kill Griffith and the other demon apostles. The 2016 anime picks up where the manga begins.

If you’re a fan of the older Berserk, I definitely recommend the new 2016 series. The art style is definitely different than the previous incarnations, it has a little or a lot more CG style art, but I don’t think it’s much of a distraction ( it is actually kinda neat), especially after the older 1980’s-1990’s look, which sadly, I am not a huge fan of.

Are you a fan of Berserk? Are you watching? Let me know in the comments! I’m hoping to see the Berserk armor debut in this new series.
