Review: Ninja Usagimaru: The Mysterious Karakuri Castle (3DS)

Last year Aksys Games released a pretty unique, cute, and challenging puzzle game titled, Ninja Usagimaru – The Gem of Blessingsfor the 3DS. This year, Aksys Games is at it again with the release of Ninja Usagimaru -The Mysterious Karakuri Castle. When I first saw this game, I had no clue what I was getting into. All I had going for me was, that I know I have never touched the first title, but knew I liked puzzle games, and I like titles published by Aksys Games. This then made me jump into the head scratching Ninja Usagimaru -The Mysterious Karakuri Castle, but is this a title you should jump into? Let’s find out with our latest review.

Story

The story begins with the character Usagimaru, “a legendary hero who wondered the land as the wind or his will took him”. Well, the winds decide to take Usagimaru “back to the village he once called home.” where he stumbles upon a badly wounded rabbit he recognizes as Toyoukebime who then tells Usagimaru that the village was attacked and all of the villagers were abducted and it is up to Usagimaru to rescue them.

As you progress though the game the story is the usual hero-saving-helpless-villagers story that we all have seen before. It’s nice but plain, and as anyone who has played puzzle games knows, puzzles games do not need stories. It is a nice touch, I give it that, but it does not really engage the player to do better. What I am trying to say is, the story is there but it isn’t that special to stand out for players, or for even have enough to make players care.

Visuals

The art style of Ninja Usagimaru -The Mysterious Karakuri Castle uses Japanese water colors and chibi anime style to present itself in such a nice and subtle way. It blends well, which helps make the game match its ninja protagonist and the Japanese folklore enemies. I can not really complain much on any of the visuals, because when first turning on Ninja Usagimaru, the title screen and the gameplay do not mislead players with any of its art and the direction it leads to.

Gameplay

So, let’s just get this out the way: I usually put an audio breakdown in my reviews, but this time I avoided it. Mainly because Ninja Usagimaru: The Mysterious Karakuri Castle soundtrack lacks. Most of the time its just a loop of the same 30 secs of audio.

Ok, since that is out of the way, the gameplay is quite addicting. Players will find themselves playing 60 different puzzle stages without the game holding your hand. A lot of times, players will even be so puzzled they will have to try, and try again, numerous amount of times just to figure out how to take each puzzle on. Whether its saving a villager, getting a block to the right place, or even crushing a kidnapper, Ninja Usagimaru: The Mysterious Karakuri Castle will have you scratching your head a few times per stage

Verdict

Ninja Usagimaru: The Mysterious Karakuri Castle is game that his hard, and excellent to look at, but lacks in music/audio and story is plain(which like I said before, is not important for a puzzle game).Would I recemmoend it? Yes, Ninja Usagimaru: The Mysterious Karakuri Castle is a nice pick up for the 3DS owners, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a challenge. As for new players, it’s a nice pick up to jump back and forth into for some pretty difficult challenges.

Can this be a Teaser for Bravely Third?

Todays marks the fourth anniversary for the Bravely series, and on the Bravely series official Twitter account, a message was prompted.

The tweet reads:

“It’s Bravely‘s 4-year anniversary! We apologize as news has been scant recently. There may be something soon….!?”

Can this be a teaser for a third installment?  I really hope so, but only time will tell.

What do you think they will announce? Leave your toughts in the comment section below.

New Pokemons Emerge, Pokemon Sun and Moon

The Pokemon Company has revealed four more new Pokemons that will be in the two new titles at the 2016 Pokemon World Championships today. You can catch the trailer below along with all the details

Crawbrawler

Pokemon-Sun-Moon_08-19-16_001

  • Category: Boxing Pokemon
  • Type: Fighting
  • Height: 2’00”
  • Weight: 15.4 lbs.
  • Ability: Hyper Cutter / Iron Fist

Crabrawler’s favorite food is Berries. It punches the trunks of trees to give the branches a good shake and knock any ripe Berries to the ground so it can feast! Many Crabrawler may gather around a tree, but only the one that emerges victorious in battle against all the others receives the privilege of eating the ripe Berries.

Crabrawler uses its claws to protect its face and belly while getting in close to an opponent to throw punches. Its punches are powerful enough to split tree trunks! Crabrawler’s pincers are sometimes torn off during its bouts—and they are said to be delicious.

Sandygast

Pokemon-Sun-Moon_08-19-16_002

  • Category: Sand Heap Pokemon
  • Type: Ghost/Ground
  • Height: 1’08”
  • Weight: 154.3 lbs.
  • Ability: Water Compaction

Crabrawler has a personality that really hates to lose, and it’s driven not only to aim for a higher position than its fellows in terms of social standing, but literally to aim for a higher position in the landscape. Perhaps as a result, it’s sometimes found clinging to tall people or to the walls of buildings! If you try to remove one against its will, you’ll be met with a sound punch.

If you heedlessly grab a Sandygast’s shovel, you’ll fall under the Pokemon’s control. A Sandygast uses its power to manipulate children into gathering sand to increase the size of its body. If a Sandygast loses its shovel, it may put up a tree branch, a flag, or another item in its place. These Sandygast are wanderers in search of their own shovels.

The tunnel-like mouth of a Sandygast can suck the vitality from people and Pokemon. Apparently it’s a test of courage in the Alola region to put your hand in a Sandygast’s mouth.

Sandygast has the new Water Compaction Ability, an Ability that no previous Pokemon has had. With Water Compaction, its Defense stat will go up by 2 if it’s hit with a Water-type move.

Palossand

Pokemon-Sun-Moon_08-19-16_003

  • Category: Sand Castle Pokemon
  • Type: Ghost/Ground
  • Height: 4’03”
  • Weight: 551.2 lbs.
  • Ability: Water Compaction

Palossand loves the vitality of Pokemon and drags small Pokemon into its body so it can steal their life force. Its sandy vortex swallows them up in a heartbeat! Pokemon dragged into Palossand leave traces of their ill will behind. It’s thought that this negative energy may be the starting point of new Sandygast…

Stufful

Pokemon-Sun-Moon_08-19-16_004

  • Category: Flailing Pokemon
  • Type: Normal/Fighting
  • Height: 1’08”
  • Weight: 15.0 lbs.
  • Ability: Fluffy / Klutz

This Pokemon may have a small body, but its strength is extraordinary. Receiving one of its powerful hits without being prepared for it can bring down even well-trained Pokemon!

The truth is that Stufful doesn’t really like being touched. It hates being hugged tightly and will flail its arms in protest. Stufful’s cute appearance and movements—plus the fluffy feel of its fur—all combine to make it super popular!Palossand controls human adults, making them build a sand castle that provides camouflage and also raises its defensive abilities. Unlike Sandygast, if Palossand loses some of the sand from its body, it can restore itself on its own. When moving about in search of prey, the shovel on top of Palossand’s head revolves. It’s said that the shovel could be serving as some kind of radar.A Sandygast emerges when the grudges of Pokemon and other creatures soak into the sand after they fall in battle. In essence, it’s a possessed lump of sand!
